Rotary wheel gif Vocational Service - one of Rotary's four Avenues of Service - involves Rotary Hout Bay club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to higher ethical standards within their own professions. Members are expected to transfer their own life skills, whatever those may be, through education, vocational training and community development to others, both the young and the less fortunate.

Rotary supports Hout Bay's Kronendal School in many ways

Rotary wheel gif Rotarians, as business leaders both active and retired, share skills and expertise through their vocations and inspire others in the process. During October each year, Rotary Club of Hout Bay focuses on projects related to this avenue of service. Rotary encourages in particular women and young people to join the club in view of the larger bouquet of life skills that can be transferred or deployed towards specific community projects.

Rotary wheel gif The Vocational aspect of service therefore represents an opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects which involve transfer of skills, youth education, adult education, small business development and the encouragement of entrepreneurial activity amongst communities as a means of encouraging  sustainability across lower income groups, particularly where their own communities are involved in building inter-dependence for the future.

Rotarylogo An example of a tailored business support programme, administered by another Hout Bay Rotarian Hans Kuhn, working with Fedde Renkema, was a project to provide start-up capital for Hout Bay resident Pamela van Wijk in order for her to commence a hairdressing salon, Pamela transforming the garage of her home in the depressed harbour area of Hout Bay.   Rotary provided her with a loan for equipment and professional needs and she now atrracts many clients from all income groups all over Hout Bay.  Her business continues to flourish, Pamela having repaid the loan.
