It's Christmas time and your'e invited to join the fun on Tuesday 14 at the
ABC club. We're ready to go from 6.00pm, so be there dressed in red, or with a red theme, and David Heath, our Sergeant and No.1 Christmas Fairy, and we can go upstairs in good time and be fully checked in, you can pay for your meal, and generally we can circulate in the bar beforehand in the ABC bar consuming a little Christmas spirit. 7.00pm is the seating time.
Wine is available for your table upstairs at the remarkably low prices charged by ABC but if you insist on something more upmarket by bringing your own, then let your taste match your wallet and be honest. Pay in R20 corkage at the bar.
Its all about trust and, as a Rotarian, this privilege has been extended to you.
Says gentile David, our little petal of a sergeant - a man of few words that matter at all, "We have no business to conduct, the night is just for
pleasure, and please to remember all the work we've put into the club generally this year and what we've come through. Bring your presents to the bar for bagging, Father Christmas has said, as he doesn't want to sod around waiting, especially when there's so many people to see on a Tuesday night. Six'o'clock it is."
So, don't forget the presents for Father Christmas to give out, value R60 per per person, one for each, and a
"man/lady" present to suit the numbers in your party - so don't come up with silly excuses and folks", says
David. "Give it some thought, there are plenty of small gift shops in Hout Bay struggling to keep going and they will appreciate your custom."
Our esteemed economist, also helping Club Services, one by the name of Colin Sutherland, will be
collecting the monies not paid. If you arrive unpaid, you will be hunted down. He has hunted down far lesser than you .... bankers from Mongolia, Bulgaria and, worse, France.
December is Rotary Family Month, by the way. Colin doesn't care about this. He's been known to get mice to hand in their cheese.

Says Marilyn Peters to each and every member of the club in grateful acknowledgement of the flowers Don took home sent to her by the club.
Marilyn has had a bad time but is slowly recovering and like the brave girl she is, she is venturing carefully out into Rondebosch and back to Rustenburg Girls High where she teaches. Now there's one teacher who totally ignores strike action.
Dear Patrick
I just wanted you to let everyone know of my utter delight with the glorious bouquet of flowers sent to me - and the card accompanying them with all the individual good wishes is a "keeper" indeed! How could anyone fail to recover speedily? Pity we can't bottle the feeling it generated. I can honestly affirm the power of such "goodwill energy" - you've been a fantastic source of it throughout the past three months.
Thank you to you all!
with love, Marilyn

It's nice to be back on e-bay breezes and communicating in the good old fashioned way by
the Internet - instead of ghastly e-mails, fax, i-phone, blackberry, Allan Walker's fax or text message and SMS. Nothing beats pictures, colour and you-me communications.
E-mail is to be banned as a club communications system wherever possible and
instructions are to be handled only by accounting people in Outlook and for emergency services, for heart attacks and advice on police road traps .
Wherever possible, communications from me will come by a link to the Internet, like today.

But its congratulations today to our new elected officers who will take us into 2011 and the nominations part of our recent business meeting were an easy pleasant session and welcome to the board these wonderful guys in their new positions with immediate effect.
Don Peters - pres elect Peter Dutton - secretary Roy Graham - treasurer
Says Don, who can always be relied on to say something twice,
Hi everyone,
There is a need for some formality in respect of my acceptance as the President for the Rotary Year 2011-12. My normal approach would have been .... thanks everyone I will do my best, but, the moment on this website calls for a more formal letter........................
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
It is a particular pleasure to send a message of thanks to you all. Your trust in accepting me as your President for the Rotary Year 2011-12 is humbling. May I
confirm that I will carry out my duties and retain the standards that are expected of me during the year.
Sincerely, Don

To go back in time
The mini-conference was a long time ago, it seems, but here's a picture of the famous golf
challenge trophy, now an annual feature of the Hout Bay Rotary Club sporting scene.
It was a great conference and the fellowship from the entire trip, up through Robertson and staying at Swellendam, was great. The general feeling was that we should organise a similar trip to Hermanus for the next annual Rotary Conference in May 2011

A few nights ago, this was Ali Rice preparing to go out for the Theatre Evening with us all - yes, sixty of us - to see that fabulous show at the Theatre on the Bay, "Evita". She had to do this in order for us all to get a senior discount. This is the problem with having so many younger members in RCHB. Athol also made sure that Ali had her walking stick and she hobbled into the foyer . Some mistook her for Allan Walker.
Did you see the great write ups in all the newspapers from Gauteng to Cape Province for this wonderful version of the Evita Peron story, encapsulated for
the small stage by some brilliant production and staging? A wonderful evening. Great show. Thanks club services for organising. What a wonderful lady on the right.

Democracy had a small showing at the election of officers meeting, called by some an AGM.
After years of insidious autocracy, the fair hand of liberty was extended for the first time and the the people were allowed to speak. They totally failed, however, to understand their sudden freedom after years of being shackled and they rejected the slight hope they had of a new land where all may speak freely.
Some had been in the bar too long, others did not understand that this was their one chance to have any rights at all. However, the new regime has agreed that this business meeting, part two, will continue in January, Butch having given us the 25 January. It was stressful for the board, trying democracy for the first time.
Seriously, you were all quite right that the annual figures provided after two years of no annual figures had not indeed been circulated beforehand and maybe were wrong to try and rubber-stamp the old balance sheets, two past years never having been prepared, to kill the present vacuum so that we can move-on.
Slow down world and let the people speak. A contuia luita.
What we have to do on the 25th January is to look at the closed off results for last year, (the printed document we cannot change) and then see what we don't like or the ways our finances are corrected and make directions for the current year to reflect what is wanted in next year's figures from the auditors in terms of layout.
But remember, ALL OF YOU, any one gets out of step in the future, we have ways of making you fall into line.
+++++++++l++++++++++++++++++++++++
After the meeting, Mark Hawthorne spoke afterwards on the beautiful flowers, flora and fauna in the Cape for a long time, but it was interesting, especially if you can remember that sarcoaulon crassicaule (noerap) grows throughout the winter rainfall areas and this particular veld
area is remarkable for the number of succulents that include about 140 genera and nearly 2000 spieces.
I must admit that that I was suffering from latin and greek overload after an hour of this (I couldn't believe it when we went onto casette no 2) but thank goodness such wonderful people exist at SANPARKS.
I
think a walk around Orangekloof in the Table Mountain foothills will be something wonderful to experience next year.

John Routley is now established as a regular member of the club after his induction, so welcome John. John really made his mark at Car Classics.
John was introduced as a new member by David Heath and he has already become a regular participant of our social network and working his backside off at Car Classics with that remarkable little red sports car, fetching food and helping so much in dealing with the public.
Welcome again, John. Its great having you in the club
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And talking of Car Classics, how about this wonderful old Rolls below seen departing early for the drinks
organised at the 12 Apostles Hotel. What a great show that was and what a wonderful spirit, thanks to all involved and those who worked so hard.
John Camplin did a fine job, as did all those who worked so hard, dealing with the
food, taking money anf handling the liquor.
The Car Classics committee at work
Food turned out to be one of our saving graces, bearing in mind the inclement weather, and we thank once again Spar for their wonderful discounts and Simon who went the extra mile for us. Please use Spar for your next shopping trip.

Four weeks ago, thanks to Chris Schuchard who is away at the moment, we had the benefit of four Dutch Rotarian friends from RC Groningen calling, who were given a special tour of Operation Medical Hope work at the Mian Road Clinic Hout Bay. They also joined us for fellowship at the club. We hope they take good impressions back to Northern Holland.
The hand a friendship in Rotary is extensive and its been wonderful this year to see so many international friends calling at our beautiful club venue, of which we are so proud.
Seen left are Marius Kooyman, Ine Konings, Patrick McLaughlin, Anneke Brink and Wilhem Konings
Also, it was great to hear from that extraordinary Rotarian from Dallas in Texas, Peter Fitzwilliams who called one night on a vist to South Africa for a conference in Johannesburg and picked our club from this website to make a
special trip to Cape Town.
Peter, good to his promise, returned his club banner by FedexX special courier to my home address this week, replacing the Hout Banner which adorns Rotary Club of Dallas.
Peter extends an invite to all to attend the Rotary Club of Dallas Centennial this
April 2011. Neville Morris could go south from Napa, Northern Calif. quite easy with Joyce for a great weekend, we are sure.
Great to hear from you Peter and we invite you visit their website at dallasrotary.org
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In conclusion, as I work on this web page for you, the whole of the Constantia Mountain above Penzance has gone up in flames and here's a picture of those wonderful helicopter crews working to douse the flames bring water buckets from Hout Bay harbour up the hillside. Four helicopters for six hours is some effort. Thank you, guys. What wonderful work you do.
Joyce and I will see you at the Christmas party.
Patrick McLaughlin (Don't forget, wear something red)
P.S. Rotary District's Sanamang from DG Shân is in the web post for you.
Its a good read.
