Sharon Angus-Leppan is the newest Rotarian in Hout Bay Rotary Club, having been inducted in a ceremony on Tuesday evening, 22 September by no lesser person than the DG of Rotary District 9350, Mike Saxby.
DG’s wife Eve, AG Henry Septoe and his wife Jennifer were also present. President of Rotary Hout Bay, Joe Schwach was at Sharon’s side when DG Mike Saxby read the induction to all members present.
Subsequently, president Joe laid the sword of honour on Sharon’s shoulder. Sharon was introduced as a new member to Rotary Hout Bay by Rotarian Chris Adams.
The sword of honour has an interesting history.
It was donated to the club by past president Don Peters, a charter member, and was his personal sword as an officer of the British South Africa Police. He carried it on many of the ceremonies during the period that he was aide-de-camp to the then Governor of Rhodesia, Sir Humphrey Gibbs, a task allocated to the BSAP.
The sword has been used at Rotary Hout Bay to induct members for over five years.
Sharon Angus-Leppan will now receive the official “fireside chat” instruction on how Rotary works and some of its history from a selected Rotarian and she will, in short time, address the club on her vocation and give all a short talk about herself.
