Sharron arrivé à la maison de France
Rotary Club of Hout Bay has recently celebrated the homecoming of their sponsored Rotary Exchange Student, Sharron Isralls. She has just spent one year in France as the guest of three French Rotary families. She now speaks fluent french and continued her education meanwhile in French schools having left to go to France from Camps Bay High School the previous year when she won the prestigeous Rotary award to travel.
(Seen on the left is Linzi Frost who is currently the District 9350 Rotoract representative, Don Peters - past president of Rotary Hout Bay SA, Sharon Isralls - returning Rotary Exchange student from France and Laura Heathfield - who heads up Rotoract, Rotary Club of Wynberg SA)Je suis passée une année (2008 – 2009) en France comme étudiante échange avec le Rotary Internationale.
I spent one year in France (2008-2009) as an exchange student with Rotary International. After being selected to go to France, there was great excitement as we all here imagined me in the French Provence. Rows of lavender, fruit fields, sun were some of the ideas I had of my year to come. As you can imagine, it came as quite a surprise when I found my home was to be in the North, the Pas de Calais region, in a little ‘city’ called Hersin Coupigny. I couldn’t even find it on a map!
In the end however, a year with the Chti’s( people of the North) will stay with me as fond and wonderful memories for many years to come. An extraordinary year with unforgettable memories of the kindness experienced from my very special “families” and from friends I met. (Even if there was very little sunshine, the grey skies were never too great a problem.)
My year in France was an opportunity for me to improve my French, meet different and interesting people, learn about the French culture and cuisine and importantly, be an ambassador for South Africa. Now, with my knowledge of the French lifestyle, cuisine, culture and language, I hope to be an ambassador for France back home in South Africa. I would like to thank my host club in France: Noeux Soleil de l’Artois as well as it’s ‘father’ club: Lens Lievin – all District 1520.
